5 of the best eats in Bangkok

From Kora of Thai Thai Poppetje. Interview by Neil Roake

Kora, co-owner and the life and soul of Thai Thai Poppetje, suggests five Bangkok food spots not to miss on your next visit.

1: Phed Phed Lhay

This one you should really try. Don’t focus on the service whatsoever. Go there for the food. Phed Phed Lhay roughly translated to “Spicy Spicy Flowing”.

2: Jeh O Chula

On one of our last evenings, we went to Jeh O Chula. You have to stand in line for quite some time, two to five hours. It’s packed, packed, packed. And they have one speciality: a big bowl with mama tom yum (instant noodles), crispy fried pork belly with shrimp, mince balls, and raw egg yolk. It was fantastic. We also ordered another speciality from them, a dish of raw salmon, something like a salmon ceviche. We really liked that one with its lemongrass dressing.

3: Charm Krung

Bangkok still astonishes me every time. I follow this guy, he’s a pretty good chef at Charmgang Curry House fame. He just opened Charm Krung, it’s a little bit hidden, located on the 6th floor of the brown building on the corner of Charoenkrung 31. They have almost like the penthouse, or the rooftop part. Very nicely decorated, super chill, very nice atmosphere, and the food was great. We had naan (fermented sausage) with dry-aged fish on top. Also, the Beef cheek Mussaman & raisin roti. (We now serve our Massaman curry at Thai Thai Poppetje with roti instead of rice.)

4: Street Food

For me, one of the best street food places was in front of the Royal Orchid Sheraton Hotel. You have all the tour buses arrive there, and late at night, there’s this street food place that opens up. I ordered the crispy pork belly with century egg stir-fry, also Pad Kra Pao with Thai basil and chilli. Her Pad See Ew, the white rice noodle stir-fry with some Kai Lan, and the Thai broccoli were also super good. I really liked that spot.

5: Boat Noodles

We always search for boat noodles at Victory Monument, one of Bangkok’s main transportation hubs. What is so particular about boat noodles is that they put in pork blood or beef blood to thicken it. I ate these as a kid. You can order pork (which are meatballs made from mince, plus slices of liver and roasted red pork), beef (stewed chunks), tom yum, and yen ta fo (fish balls in pink, fermented tofu broth). You choose your noodle (thin firm rice noodles, wide soft rice noodles, or chewy wheat noodles). And then you just keep ordering… the bowls pile up next to you, and you just keep on going. You’re like a machine. With every slurp, you’re like, wow, this is so much umami.
