Describing the NDSM warf as a “hidden gem” or a “rough patch” feels outdated, like something from 2017. This area of Amsterdam has evolved and is no longer just a free port for artists and those living on the edge. It has transformed into a polished diamond that is here to stay; there’s nothing temporary about it anymore. However, there’s always a twist, and in this case, that twist is Helling7. Now, don’t mistake it for a shabby spot where artists gather for inspiration. It’s actually a true gem! It’s situated in a rather inconspicuous location that requires some searching, but once you find it, it’s hard to miss. As you climb a few stories, you’ll enter this former dockworkers’ cantina. It has been beautifully constructed using reclaimed materials, giving it a distinct character. Upon entering, you’ll notice the open kitchen on your right, where the chefs diligently work over an open fire. The enticing aroma of charcoal immediately stimulates your appetite, preparing you for a delightful dinner. On your left, there’s a bar area where patrons enjoy their aperitifs. Just a few steps below, you’ll find the restaurant with its huge glass front, offering a captivating view. The entire menu at Helling7 revolves around the open fire in the kitchen.

Chefs Dirk and Carl aim to demonstrate that cooking over an open fire doesn’t have to be daunting and that it can produce incredible dishes using simple, high-quality ingredients. Personally, I still believe that cooking over an open fire is more challenging than using gas, but hey, who am I to disagree with these two fire-cooking enthusiasts? My solution: simply dine at Helling7 and let them take care of the cooking for you.

The location may be slightly off the beaten path, even for North Amsterdam residents, but that only adds to the sense of adventure. Trust me, it’s just a quick 4-minute bike ride from the NDSM ferry; easy peasy. Yet, it feels like embarking on an exciting journey. The greatest advantage of this location is the breathtaking view of the IJ and the entire city. In front of the restaurant, there’s a spacious deck, and I’m eagerly anticipating countless evenings there, witnessing the sun setting over my beloved city.

The team behind Helling7 also manages well-known establishments like Panache, Door74, and the recently opened Verlan. So, if you’re a fan of any of these places, I highly recommend giving Helling7 a try.
