The best DAM coffee

By Andy Fenner

Dutch Coffee Week took place from the 4th to the 6th of April, and it was a vibrant celebration of all things coffee. Attendees who purchased tickets gained access to a plethora of activities, including latte art throwdowns, tastings from roasteries beyond the city limits, a bustling street food market, and insightful industry workshops. However, the fervor for coffee in Amsterdam extends far beyond the confines of this festival, as the city’s coffee scene continues to thrive. So, if you missed the caffeinated buzz of Dutch Coffee Week, you don’t need to have been there to start exploring. Start now.

Coffee waits for no one.

FRIEDHATS.
Offering a diverse range of beans and roasting profiles, the cafe serves almost all of them as a filter or espresso. This is the advantage of actually owning the roastery, which these guys do. Having complete control of their roasting process, they are able to accentuate nuanced flavours from each carefully-sourced coffee. Expect a huge range of options, ranging from fairly accessible to waaaaay out there. Enjoy it all in a space that is bold, bright and undeniably cool. More punk than Zen.

FIVE WAYS.
Another example of the roastery-that-also-opens-a-cafe, owner Ben O’Callaghan has taken this a step further and opened two stores. He’s taken it further, in fact, by sticking a full kitchen into one of them (at Boerhaaveplein in the East.) Here, you’ll find everything you’d expect from a self-respecting Aussie serving brunch. Avo toast, shakshouka, eggs benny etc. All done flawlessly. At both stores you’ll find multiple grinders, allowing you to pick your way through a diverse range of coffee profiles.

SKINA.
Sometimes a venue opens its doors and the design is so cool that it walks the danger of getting written off as “hipster.” But don’t let the amazing interior, slick machine and undeniably curated identity of Skina trick you. This is a spot serving some of the best coffee in Amsterdam. Mainly showcasing beans from Antwerp-based RushRush, they have rare pop-ups with rotating guests too. With a wide range of brew methods available, you are in good hands.

UNCOMMON.
Working hard at establishing direct relationships with farmers is key for any coffee roastery, and the team at Uncommon take this very seriously. The results are clear to see – and to taste – with a lineup of some highly sought-after beans. Beans are interchanged from areas like Peru, Kenya, Ethiopia and even Mexico, depending on seasonality and yields. Uncommon roasts these coffees with a style that leans towards lighter/gentle profiles and serves them all in their beautiful, minimalist space. A surprisingly ambitious food menu is more than a supporting cast here, with some pretty experiential combinations being skillfully pulled off.
