Did you know that ‘Baut’ is named this way because of their very first pop-up (in 2012!) on the Wibautstraat? Following this first pop-up, Baut moved around town as a travelling circus transforming location after location into the coolest restaurants in town. This is important info because you can still feel these starting roots when visiting Baut Oost, who after over a decade came back “home” to the Wibautstraat.

In all honesty, I’ve followed the “Baut” journey for a long time. From that very first pop-up, when I didn’t even work in hospitality yet, to doing collabs with them and from restaurant C, which used to house in this location, back to Baut Oost as it is now. I love the team and I love the food. The reason why is quite simple for me; the food, which is unpretentious but always of high quality and served in a truly fun environment. Eating out at Baut Oost is Fun with a capital F.

The place is big, but never feels too big. Maybe that’s because it’s always filled to the brim with beautiful people. Music? Booming. Lights? Glamorously dimmed. Cocktails? Chilled. And what’s that in front of you? Their signature steak tartare (not on the menu? Riot! They need to make it for you). All dishes are made to be shared, so don’t expect a menu with starters, mains and desserts. Just fill your table with friends and try as much as you can. When going on a hot date give them a call and see if they can place you at the long counter along the open kitchen – arguably the best seats in the house! The only seats that can truly beat them are out on the terrace.

Baut Oost has one of the best terraces in the city. It’s BIG, so you’ll (almost) always be able to grab a spot out there to enjoy a great meal under their huge canopies (a great installation when the weather out there is… uhm… Dutch!

The love for cocktails runs deep with team Baut Oost. When Baut Oost was still restaurant C (R.I.P) they used to have Sundays where the chef’s menu was paired with cocktails. Dangerously great Sundays they were, and luckily a lot of the cocktails are still on the menu, or even improved.

So long story short: gather friends and fill the table. Find a date and sit at the chef’s counter or… challenge yourself and go alone. I 100% guarantee that you’ll leave with new friends, called team Baut Oost.
